Parent FAQ

What is Scouting about?

Cub Scouting means “doing.”  Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys doing things.  Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting-citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness.  Many of the activities happen right in the den and pack meetings

How do we join?

Complete the “Scout Application” and pay the one time registration fee of $28.50.  You can get the application from the Membership Chair  (Alicia Mathews – 972-658-9517) or the Committee Chair (Mike Weikert – 972-672-7976, committeechait@pack367.org)

Do you have to join at a specific age or grade?

No, Cub Scouts is for Boys grade 1st thru 5th.  A boy can join any time as long as they are in those grades.  After 5th grade your son would be joining Boy Scouts.

When do you meet?

Your son will be part of a Den, each Den sets their own schedule for meetings and they set that schedule in a way to complete the “rank” requirements for their rank.   Some meet every week other twice a month plus special meetings or field trips like a visit to the police department or the landfill.

What is a Cub Scout Rank?

“Rank” refers to the level in Cub Scouts where your boy is participating, they correspond to the grade level of your son.   1st = Tiger,  2nd = Wolf,  3rd = Bear,  4th – Webelos and 5th = Webelos II

How much does it really cost?

The initial registration fee for a new scout is $28.50.  Each scout re-registers each year but after the first year, the Pack pays for the renewal out of the funds raised during the year.

Each Den determines if they need some nominal funds to pay for crafts or supplies but that is normally not more than $5/mo.  Sometimes throughout the year your Den is responsible for an aspect of a Pack meeting or an event and it may require some funds, that will be up to your Den what you do and how the cost, if any, is shared.

Events, there are some costs associated with participating in some special events, the costs are minimal, events include:  Rocket Round-up – each boy makes his own model rocket (kits range from $7-$20)  Pine Wood Derby – each boy makes his own car – kits are $4,  Camping – Each family is asked to share in the cost of the three meals, usually $7 total per person for each campout.

Uniforms – Each scout is responsible for their own uniform.  The Scout Shop in Lewisville will walk you thru everything you need.  If this is a hardship, contact the Committee Chair about seeing if there is assistance available.

How does the Pack raise money to fund operations?

Pack 367 has two fund raisers, both in the Fall.

Popcorn:

The Pack will have two main fundraising events in 2011/2012.  The first is Popcorn Sales which has already started with “Show and Sale” and will conclude in Sept/Oct with individual scout sales.   The Pack has a requirement this year for each Scout to sell a minimum of 12 items from the items provided by the distributor.  That is of course a minimum, Scouts can sell as much as they desire and earn the incentives provided by the supplier.  The Pack also provides an incentive for the top three sellers in the Pack, they are always pretty cool outdoors/scout type incentives.

This year we have added  a couple of new rewards for the boys.  Each Scout will receive one (1) cream pie for each $100 they sell, they will be given the opportunity to throw that pie in the face of the Pack leader of their choice.  Finally, when every boy in the Pack reaches the 12 item minimum, the Pack will sponsor an outdoor Laser Tag event at a facility in The Colony.

BBQ Dinner

Last year we had our first Community Wide BBQ dinner fund raiser and it was a great success.  We plan to have that event again this year on October 22nd at Button United Methodist Church.  Last year each scout sold 10 tickets ($5 kids, $10 adults).   Sam Fietman, one of the fathers in the Pack, does BBQ competitively so the food is first rate.

What does the Pack do with the money raised during our fund raisers?

Pack 367 utilizes its funds in a way that maximizes the fun and experience for the entire Pack, it is up to the scout (and his family) to participate in the Pack events and to advance in rank

The Pack uses the funds raised by the boys to pay for the re-charting of the Pack with the National Organization each year, all ribbons, trophys and awards given out at events, all patches, pins and belt loops earned by the boys, the manual, neckerchief, and hat given to each boys when they graduate to their next rank, special visitors at pack meetings, camp site fees for family camp outs, supplies for community service projects, and purchase and maintenance of Pack owned equipment used for our main events.

What else does the Pack do?

The following Pack events are planned for the coming year, these are in addition to what you do with your Den.  It is important to remember that all events are run by volunteers in the Pack.  The Pack also provides support to the local schools and city administrations when flag ceremonies are needed.
